Choosing a Platform

  • Decision factors:
    • Nature of your organization and the wiki audience (academic, law firm)
    • Cost factors (e.g., PBWorks gives free sites to educational organizations, nonprofits and libraries)
    • Need to protect security, privacy
    • Public vs. private read access
    • Public vs. private write access
    • Page-level access
    • Space needs (PBWorks = 2GB free, or 40GB for educational institutions)
    • How much control?
    • Does it need to be usable by mobile users?
    • Can the features that are important to you be integrated into the site (e.g., traffic monitoring)?

  • Popular free wiki hosts on the web:
  • Enterprise wikis
    • MS SharePoint (popular for intranets)
