ABOUT THE PROGRAMS

Updates from the Law Library of Congress

New law librarian of Congress David Mao will provide an overview of and an update on what is happening at the Law Library of Congress. Joining him will be Andrew Weber, legislative information systems manager, who will speak about recent updates to THOMAS, as well as the Law Library’s work with new media; and Tina Gheen, emerging technologies librarian, who will talk about the Law Library’s virtual services projects, and the use of linked data and other emerging technologies.

Digitization Project Management

In the era of digital media, law libraries have more tools than ever before to showcase unique collections while providing access for patrons around the world. While some law libraries have created websites that display documents from a collection, few have taken the next step to produce a virtual library that combines a collection with interpretative analysis and associated external resources. Using the Frank S. Tavenner, Jr. Tokyo War Crimes Trial Papers, UVA Law Library's digital librarian, Loren Moulds, and digital fellow, Elizabeth Ladner, will discuss the process of identifying ideal collections for online publication and creating a robust website using available resources, including personnel limitations, equipment selection and software tools such as ContentDM and Drupal. They will also examine how the finished product provides a research portal to important resources for a broad range of users, from lawyers to educators to the general population.
