ABOUT THE PROGRAMS

The Latest Technology Innovations in the Practice of Law

Andrew Winston will speak about the evolution of knowledge management (KM) at law firms and how KM initiatives are changing the practice of law. Winston is a practicing attorney, Law Librarian for the Graduate Recruit Program at Congressional Research Service, and Reference and Research Intern for the University of Richmond’s Muse Law Library.

What Law Librarians Need to Know about the Changing Landscape of Lawyering

The environment for law practice has changed radically in response to dramatic economic and technological shifts. Each of our panelists will offer a unique point of view about altered expectations for lawyers generally, and particularly for new lawyers as legal researchers. The panelists are Audrey Burges, Attorney at Davenport & Poindexter, PC; Andrew P. Connors, formerly Law Clerk to Judge William G. Petty; and Kevin M. Donovan, Senior Assistant Dean for Career Services at the University of Virginia School of Law.  The session will conclude with an open discussion about how we can best continue to fulfill our mission as law librarians.

Tongue-Tied Law Librarians:  Speaking Successfully and Persuasively

The ability to speak persuasively is essential to law librarianship. We use speech to teach legal research, defend our budgets, share the brilliance of what we do with our colleagues, and advocate for public policies that support the free flow of information. Molly Bishop Shadel, Associate Professor at the University of Virginia School of Law and co-author of Tongue-Tied America:  Reviving the Art of Verbal Persuasion, will impart wisdom gained through law and the theater to help us reach our full potential as persuasive speakers.
